Simon Wiesenthal bei Abnahme von Prüfungen für ORT
Simon Wiesenthal giving out diplomas within the ORT vocational program. On July 23, 1953, final examinations were held at a vocational school in Wels, Upper Austria, in courses for automobile mechanics, electricians, and lathe operators. All of the examinees were political refugees from Eastern Europe cared for by the U.S. Escapee Program and housed in DP camp no. 1002. Each course consisted of 120 hours of training, which would enable participants to earn a living in a skilled trade, either in the USA or in another country. The courses were organized and conducted by the Austrian Mission of the World ORT Union. The course fees ($40 per student) were defrayed entirely by the U.S. Escapee Program. ( Staff Photo Linz)
